Yeah, Frank Gambale would have one of the WORST tones I've ever heard!!!
I like Holdsworth, however each time I've seen him live in intimate small-club settings I've left early out of boredom (don't get me wrong, I've got a good ear, appreciate great playing and have followed Holdsworth since the early 80's, just that stylistically it meshed into one big legato-gelato icecream thing)...
(Apologies for such a negative sounding post!)
agreed on both points. i've seen both live and they're amazing for about 10~15 minutes, but your mind tends to wander afterwards and start wondering if they'll do anything else that'd be more fun to listen to. i've allan play live 3 times. i think that's the way it'll stay. i really have no interest in seeing him again.
yeah, sometimes Allan kinda bores me too......his music is a bit too sublime. But I do agree that his style and technique is more fluid than Gamable. He has such a great touch on the guitar. But compositionally I find Gambale more exciting. Yeah, his guitar tone is pretty nasty..moreso today than in the past....but I can get past that sometimes and enjoy his playing.
holdsworth is amazing! for about 15 minutes... i've seen him live several times and about half-hour is about as much as i can take. it gets real boring real fast. for me, at least, and quite a few other people it seems...

Allan's amazing. I do think though that he can be kind of tough and at certain
times(not very often) I can't listen to him long without feeling like your average guitar solo hater.
Mr Gambale on the other hand, I have a really hard time digesting.
He somehowe always(almost anyway) manages to sound like he's playing exercises.
I get more a feeling of having gone to the circus than listening to music with
him(have I not read this before ). I like the MVP-album though and, in
the name of all that is fair, I haven't even heard 50% of his stuff.
When it comes to technique it seems like they are on the opposite end of the spectrum(without getting to crazy).
Both in how it look and how they sound. _________________ Jesus saves, but Gretzky scores on the rebound
