Hi guys, I was wondering if anyone can tell me what effect guthrie is using to get that glass of water sound during the boomberang demo on the first tone merchants dvd!? It can also be heard in the studio recording of erotic cakes.

Cheers

Al M

If its the bit i'm thinking of, its not an effect (as in pedal etc)

You cross the B and E string over with your left hand and bend both together.

Actually, I believe you are referring to his engaging of an effect called a Ring Modulator. I'm pretty sure that Guthrie uses a Mooger Fooger brand one.

a ring modulator does make this sound, but it doesnt mean he actually uses one in that video. just try crossing the strings over like he does with his left hand, then bend the e string up (which is now in the place of the b)

if you don't want to, then a ring modulator pedal will do and just bend them normally Smile

But Dr Venkman said don't cross the strings..

How on earth do you cross the strings?

I crossed the strings, it gives a really natural ring modulator sound Smile

I recall this being in an article with Steve Vai in Guitarist years ago.. sounds fun, if I can pick up the speed a bit this'd be a cool thing to use from time to time Smile
