Obviously, this poll doesn't reflect reality as most members have not voted and I know that there are a bunch of lurkers who don't register. I also have a good idea based on the orders of the DVDs where the fans are coming from. It's still about the same as I posted earlier, but mainland Europe and Asia are gaining ground:
Local - USA Southern Cal and West Coast: 19%
USA Central - 7%
USA East Coast - 14%
United Kingdom - 38%
Mainland Europe - 12%
Australia/NZ - 5%
Asia - 4%
Other (Brazil, Chile) - 1%
One of the most interesting trends I've noticed is the high number of fans from Scandinavia: Sweden, Norway, Finland. I've sent a ton of DVDs to that part of the world.
Japan is still slow going, which I find the most perplexing as it's a huge market for extreme virtuosic guitar playing. I've shipped more DVDs to Korea and Taiwan and those markets combined are just a small fraction of Japan. I've been surprised by the recent interest in Taiwan (bunch of new DVD orders) and this forum:
http://www.modernmusician.com/forum/showthread.php?t=24917
The links to the clips pages, the bits of English spelling out Guthrie's name, and the universal exclamation points tell us that they're essentially saying the same things that we are.
BTW, just shipped 6 copies to Taiwan and 3 more to Japan today, so Asia's slowly but surely catching on.
An interesting tidbit I heard is that the Japanese aren't really into forums and message boards like these. I heard that it's not really in their culture to express opinions so freely. I'm not sure whether I could believe that or not, but it's interesting. That may explain it somewhat, but I still find it weird that the huge virtuosic guitar crowd in Japan hasn't latched onto Guthrie yet. But the album should finally and definitely change that. _________________ Ed Yoon

You're right. Good point. Revised estimation:
Local - USA Southern Cal and West Coast: 18%
USA Central - 7%
USA East Coast - 13%
Canada - 2 %
United Kingdom - 38%
Mainland Europe - 12% (including Scandinavia)
Australia/NZ - 5%
Asia - 4% (including Israel)
Other (Latin America) - 1%
Now that's a little more accurate. Thanks! _________________ Ed Yoon

Hi there GGG. I'm living in Hong Kong (originally from Australia). Good to see some more guitar fans in Hong Kong (just wish there were some good quality music/guitar shops in Hong Kong with quality staff/luthiers).
Hey Ed, you wanna open up a shop in Hong Kong mate?

I've been to Hong Kong numerous times and always enjoy visiting there: a very fun town with lots of action. But my visits were always 2~3 days at the most so I never got to check out the music scene. I did visit the music store there that carries all the regular stuff like Fender, etc. What's the live music scene there like? _________________ Ed Yoon

The live music scene here in HK mainly involves a lot of cover bands with Fillipino musicians. They are fantastic musicians, but the songs they play are rather lame (keeps the expat community happy I guess).
I think there is a niche market in the live scene for music that's more on the edge, with some room for funk, blues, edgy rock and fusion. Unfortunately, the radio focuses on Canto Pop or Mandarin Love songs (which is OK to practice my language skills, but that's about all I find it good for).
Re the music shops here, they are just into selling commodity items...
I'm just on the doorstep to Japan, so I wanna get over there and buy some quality Strats at good prices (i.e. not some of the poor quality Fenders they make in the US these days). I'm starting get to back into original Tokai's and would love to just spend a few days checking out the guitar shop district over there... I can do that, and my girlfriend can go and buy clothes and all that other woman stuff!

Yeah, it didn't seem the major touring bands play in Hong Kong very much. Being how cosmopolitan HK is, I thought that a lot of bands would go there, but apparently not... The music store I visited there is called Tom Lee's. Was okay... Like you say, just standard stuff... _________________ Ed Yoon

Welcome! Actually, I've shipped quite a few DVD copies to Hawaii as well, so I'm sure there are other Guthrites there enjoying the Hawaiian sun. _________________ Ed Yoon
