|

I just got to listen to the first mix of a new version of "Waves" that'll be on the upcoming debut solo album from Guthrie. All I can say is that this long overdue album will have been worth the wait, guys! Simply amazing playing with great production, big sound, and nice arrangements. Guthrie's tone is really happening, too. He's using his new Suhr Classic with the SSC installed through a Cornford RK100 and the new Carrera and the sounds are totally righteous.
Paul C will be chopping up the song into little clips and you'll be able to hear little snippets pretty soon. As far as Guthrie's playing, it's great in that he doesn't hold back. He is just letting loose and the whole song sounds and feels improvised. There's a nice balance of go-for-broke over-the-top playing and tasty phrasing throughout. This album is going to kill! _________________ Ed Yoon

By chance, do you know what label the CD will be released on? Will it be a world wide release or only in the U.K.? |

Yes, the label is Cornford Records although the recording will be licensed for distribution by other labels all around the world, I'm sure. _________________ Ed Yoon

I tell you, I can't stop listening to this new version of Waves. It has some of the best playing I've heard from Guthrie and that's saying a lot! I played it for my wife and she really loved it, too. She's not really into all the guitar-heavy kind of stuff I'm into, but she really digs Guthrie and said, "His playing and music sounds so sexy!"
There is definitely some of that classical precision, sophistication, elegance, and beauty in Guthrie's playing and music. I suppose that aspect of Guthrie's style won't appeal to all. There are a bunch of people who aren't into that sort of proficiency and stylisms, but heck, nobody can be all things to everybody. I know I love it. I grew up listening to a lot of classical music as a little kid because my mother was really into it and I guess that's why I enjoy references to that style of playing and writing in rock or whatever else.
Guthrie certainly doesn't hold back the number of notes he's playing and I'm sure some are going to complain that he's "overplaying", but the truth is that all of the hyper-speed runs fit the context of the music and they're still very fun and interesting to listen to. I also think nearly 6 months of non-stop touring with Asia before re-recording the guitar parts did much to further hone his chops in a rock context. And make no mistake about it: this is a ROCK GUITAR album and I firmly believe that it's going to raise the bar in instrumental guitar music. _________________ Ed Yoon

*VERY* excited to hear this!
I read in the latest Guitar Techniques in an advert for this years Music Live, and I quote:
Quote: |
An extra treat this year sees GT contributor Guthrie Govan launching his debut album with his band Erotic Cakes who'll be performing tracks from the long-awaited opus on both Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 November.

Ed, what do you think the ETA is on those album snippets you spoke of?
Also, I know that Thal is going to be on the album, but will any other players be making a cameo? |
