So what do you guys think of the clips?

Is it just me? But EJ really sounds like he's out of his element. That clip really sounds bad.

I agree. His phrasing, time and feel are just not happening on that track. 
Some of the other tracks sound great! |

I agree. His phrasing, time and feel are just not happening on that track.

Which ones do you like? I do like Mr. Syms by Howe and Afro Blue by Jeff Richman so far. I think the mp3 compression has something to do with the guitar tones sounding so squashed and uninspiring though overall.

Honestly, I think EJ shot the load years ago. And I was a *huge* fan.

what the heck happened to him? how can a guy lose it like that?  anything that has to do with his hearing loss? doesn't seem like he has a clue on playing jazz. like me!  |

This CD could have been so much better had they taken off a few players and added in a few more like Scott Henderson and Allan Holdsworth. Howe and Gambale just sound like they're doing their typical technique thing and yes, EJ sounds way lost.

I have to agree with that - Gambale's sound is just horrible, and I think those clips are proof that sweep picking has its place, but not everywhere!
EJ's playing isn't his best there, but at least he still has good tone. |

I just don't get it. When David Liebman and other sax players have done tributes to Coltrane they are serious about it and the music reflects that.
Liebman did an AMAZING concert tribute to Coltrane with Wayne Shorter. I have this on DVD and they not only captured the musical influence of Trane, but his spiritual influence as well. This "guitar supreme" tribute is such a joke in the sense that it doesn't capture anything. Just a bunch of technical guitar players showing their chops off on Trane tunes. It's like they're not seeing the forest for the trees.
I wish more guitar players in their own music (not just tributes) would get into the spirituality of jazz improvisation. Coltrane did this and I think that's one of the major reasons he stands out so much. It really shows in his music. Wayne Shorter is right up there too I think. I just honestly can't think of many guitarists who reflect this. Any ideas anyone?
