What I tend to do with legato playing is to divide up my practice time into the following:
1)play scales and sequences using standard legato(i.e. hammers AND pull offs)
2)play scales and sequences using hammer ons only(even when descending).
I feel that the most effective sounding legato is a successful combination of the two.
Also, be sure that you are exerting the exact amount of energy to produce a clear note. If you dont you are wasting valuable energy.

I hope that helps!

That's how Alan Holdsworth chooses to do as well if I'm not mistaken?

What seems to be the technique that you personally use more when descending...pull-offs or hammer ons? Just curious Smile[/i]

I'm not sure exactly what holdsworth does but by watching vids of him play he seems to use much more of the hammers only approach. I haven't come across any teaching material by allan apart from the reh vid and he doesn't go into any technical detail in that.
I personally use more of the standard hammers and pulloffs, however I'm always working on getting the balance between the two. Smile

+1 on that. i read in an old interview (gp 1990?) that he was striving towards hammering only, although that's not really realistic in practice, and that's not a perfect description of what he actually does.

i've seen allan live three times, very up close, and can attest that that is what he does more and more. first time i saw him (1992) you could still talk about technique. last time (2001) it would have been insulting to even think about his technique ... to me, allan is only music (like i'd ever be close to pull anything he does off!?).

btw: i'm pretty drunk, so i don't know if this makes sense, and i'll probably edit tomorrow. Cool Embarassed

and yes, rick: i hate you for your legato technique Wink Shocked

Derryl Gabel has an excellent legato video out. Warning - it does require some serious fretting hand stretches though! I own his first video and will likely buy the second one as well. He's an amazing player and teacher.
There are video clips on his site. http://derrylgabel.com

a quick vague answer is to be able to play anything you can with a pick or fingers with legato. Whether scales, arpeggions, pagannini or chords. I think it's all important. As far as patterns and pattern you can think of;

if two notes a string: 12, 13, 14, 23, 24, 34 try all accending desending forward and backwards.

If 3 notes: 123, 124, 134, 213, 214, 231, etc

4 notes: 1234, 4321, 1324 whatever combo through scales you can think of. Try it clean too, so you can here if the sound is even or not, the compression of distortion sometimes hides weaknesses.

cheers,

Tim
