Hi Scott,

Vibe Station is such a great album!

What I admire in your playing and compositions is that you convey a wide range of emotions throughout the whole album, as well as within individual songs.
I find myself smiling and sometimes even laughing when I listen to many of your songs and solos. I think being able to express humor of different kinds so sincerely and easily is probably the hardest thing to do as a musician. I haven't heard many musicians that can do that.

I know talking about music and especially its meaning is best left for critics, but what the hell, here are the questions:

Do you make a conscious decision to achieve the above as you compose, or is it rather the result of a subconscious process?

And also, do you attach any specific meaning to your compositions, assuming after they are finished? For example, is Church Of Xotic Dance an allusion to your young self playing in a strip club and your aversion towards organized religion?

Thanks for the compliment, and I agree that expressing humor in a "serious" piece of music is difficult. A fart sound is too obvious (but still funny), and a group of notes which only a few people hear is too subtile. I thought it was pretty funny to quote E.S.P. in a dumbass song like Dew Wut, but maybe there are people who've never heard that Miles tune and won't get the joke. Anyway, it often happens by accident or sub-conciously and isn't planned.

I always name songs after they're finished, because of what they remind me of after multiple listens. You nailed it on Church Of Xotic Dance - I have no use for organized religion but plenty of use for naked girls. (if only they had a use for me....) Xotic is spelled that way as a compliment to the company who makes the RC Booster, the best boost pedal in the world!!! And the new Dual Channel RC sounds even better than the original!!! This is something real and worth worshipping!!!

Even after listening to the songs a bunch of times I didn't get the joke, but I'll try to polish those tin ears...

All hail the electronic engineers with good ears!!
