After reading the thread of Scott talking about some of his favorite concert experiences as a fan, it reminded me of the first time (and almost second) that I saw Scott live. The first time I saw Scott live was with Jean Luc Ponty in 1984. I played the violin for about 10 years and loved the violin players in jazz/rock. So I dragged all my musician friends to see Jean Luc Ponty and we were all blown away by the guitar player that night (Scott) as he played some amazing solos. I was the only jazz fan in a rock crowd of my buddies and they all started hounding me about the guitar players in jazz. So fast forward a little bit and we see this concert of the Chick Corea Elektric Band on cable and there is Scott again. I start pointing him out to my buddies and they go ape shit, there is that guy again! So not long after I see that opening for Allan Holdsworth (what a great bill!) is the Chick Corea Elektric Band. I tell all my buddies about it and we get our tickets. So we are there early to see Scott with Chick and when the curtain opens there he is................Frank Gambale! We all look at each other and can't speak for at least the first two songs. Where is Scott? During the intermission I go and talk to one of the sound guys and ask about Scott. He tells me that he was told a "disgruntled" Scott had left the band. What a shock! I tell the guys and they are speechless. At least Holdsworth came on and blew us away as a consolation!
