Most people I know use a jazz iii at some point, but my dilemma is that I love the tortex ones, but they are to small for me, so I use the red xl, but I prefer the feel of tortex against the string. I know a few people who have the same problem. I tried the ultex sharps but wasnt a massive fan, What picks do you guys use? are there any smaller pick companies with an alternative?? _________________ "The reason why guthrie is so good, is that he doesen't spend most of his time on the petrucci forum bitching about vai" |

I recently moved to Ultex Jazz IIIs after using the standard Ultex pick for years.
I used to use Tortex before that but they wore out very quickly for me. Ultex was a Godsend, high durability and awesome string attack.
Mate of mine prefers Jazz XLs too so hopefully one Day Jim Dunlop will come out with the Jazz III XL in Ultex!.
You could have a look into http://www.redbeartrading.com picks.
They've been mentioned on here a few times as Andy Wood uses them and iirc Guthrie tried them. May even be some Forumites who use them/tried them. _________________ Cheers

I usally use Dunlops 205 Usa. But I'm a big fan of V picks and Brossard picks. You should check it out.

I used to use Dunlop Big Stubbys (2 or 3mm), then moved to Dunlop Stubbys (2 or 3mm). Eventually I got turned onto the red nylon Jazz IIIs by some friends who attended a music college - now I love them. I've tried other picks since then but I've usually never been happy with either the point or the release of other picks (inc. the black Stiffo ones)

I love the Ultex Jazz III. They feel nice, sound good, and last forever. My only problem is that they are a little too small for rhythm playing. |

Guthrie is pretty much using the Red Bear Big Jazzer (no speed bevel and with grip holes) all the time. He scuffs up the sides a bit with a file to get that grind when he'd like, but other than that, it's a stock Red Bear Big Jazzer. _________________ Ed Yoon

I actually received a Red Bear Lil Jazzer (no bevel, no holes, specified as extra pointy) for Christmas. Also got a black leather key ring fob holder for the pick. This pick really is wonderful.
As I mentioned above, I've never been satisfied with the way other picks (other than red Jazz IIIs) come off the string. I like a slick release and found that other picks just didn't do it right. I did like the Stubbys, but they wear down just too quickly.
However, the Red Bear Lil Jazzer has the best qualities of all of these picks, and (so far) no negatives (other than perhaps price, but when you consider how much you spend on other gear, I don't think it's that expensive)! Slick release, super hardwearing, great shape/feel and beautifully crafted. If you have ever felt the same about pick release and/or longevity, I would suggest you check them out.

P.S. Monica at Red Bear Trading (with whom I communicated when ordering) was great. Could not recommend their customer service highly enough |

Hi Ed, which thickness of the Big Jazzer does Guthrie use?
The Red Bear Website lists them as:
Light
Medium
Heavy
Extra Heavy
Gypsy Jazz
Cheers

i would love to try a red bear pick, but i'm using the ultex jazz iii's at the moment. give planet waves black ice picks a try; they are a very similar shape to the jazz iii's (in between a regular and an xl in size), and are made of a similar material to the tortex picks (i got them in 1.10 mm, but i go through any picks like a mother; that's what 5+ hours a day does to them! ) _________________ "What's wrong with being sexy?" - Nigel Tufnel |

hi guys ive just recieved a big jazzer medium, and a t2 medium.
they are both great but i prefer the shape nd feel of the big jazzer, they are awesome. just order 1 and ull know. it is just the note the pic noise is so minimal and smooth. i think because pics are normaly cheap we think of them in that fassion. but it realy is the start of your sound. it just makes me want to keep playing |

Well I actually love the Dunlop tortex .70 ( i think thats it) the ones Paul Gilbert uses - great tone (no harshness) and they are stiff enough to pull off most fast picking shennanigans. |

Ok, so I've been playing the Red Bear Big Jazzer for over a month now and I have to say it is awesome. The sound and feel you get is very smooth and the pick is really durable, it hasn't worn down much. You can also get the pick care kit, which lets you file down and buff the edges if they wear out. |
