I'm looking to purchase one myself, mainly inspired by Guthrie's creative use of this type of effect, but one thing I'm wondering about is what kind of looper or sampler Guthrie is using nowadays. When I saw him live back in late 2009, he was using a Boomerang, if my memory serves me right, but in more recent gig pics, I don't see any actual looper.

I don't think he uses a looper in performance...for clinics he was using a Boomerang but recently I saw him with a Boss RC-2. _________________ SoundCloud
In the Lick Library webcast he used his Eventide Timefactor, which has a basic looper on it. I wouldn't count on it as a dedicated looper, though... I'm just adding on to the list.

for basic looping you could use a delay with loop function, like the TimeFactor (not your average basic delay pedal though).
for more control, get a dedicated one like the boss models or boomerang, or others. matter of taste i assume here, although the the small rc-2 packs a lot in a tiny package. you will need an external switch anyway ...
