Big, long fingers! Seriously, he'll cover 4~5 frets (especially in the upper register) with 3 fingers when most of us would need to use the pinky. I'd say doing so also facilitates string-bending with the strong ring finger. _________________ Ed Yoon

if you watch enough you'll also see that his 4th finger comes in often to reach notes higher up
I spent years conditioning myself to finger per fret and 3nps systems, then when i began to incorporate pentatonic 3nps into my playing i found the only way to incorporate it naturally was to throw the rulebook away _________________ Suhr GG modern > peterson strobe 2 > EB wah > Rothwell compressor > Xotic bb+ > Suhr Shiba > Suhr Riot > DE phaser > Analogman bichorus (all in carl martin combinator) > Bogner XTC head > EB volume > Eventide timefactor > cornford 2x12
I also think that if that if you're really improvising, then it's often useful to have one finger in reserve. Otherwise you can run out at an inconvenient moment and then need to move your whole hand for that extra note.
Worth noting McLaughlin doesn't use the pinky much either. He can play a bit too. Although, it may not be for the same reason.
On the subject of technical efficiency, anyone else think it's odd the way Al DeMeola flaps his fingers all over the shop. Don't know how he manages to get them down on time at all. Whereas, some shredders hardly, visibly, move them at all.
