Studio ace and guitar legend Carl Verheyen conducted a very informative gear clinic and then topped off the evening with a smokin' and entertaining 90-minute show at the Tone Mecca last night. Here are the pics:

Carl is a very engaging performer with a positive vibe all around. The half-hour clinic portion was spent explaining the ins-and-outs of his rather massive rig featuring a stereo clean amp setup of a Vox AC30 and a Blackface Twin and a pair of vintage Marshalls powering a pair of THD 2x12 in a wet/dry setup.
Carl often reminded me of Eric Johnson tonally but he definitely has his own thing going on as well. Carl's got crisp chops and certainly gets around on the fingerboard, but it's the musicality and the phrasing that stands out in the end. There were some instrumentals but these were song-oriented with Carl singing on all the vocal songs (and very well, I might add). A very informative and fun night all-around... I'm definitely looking forward to having Carl and his band perform here again in the not-too-distant future. _________________ Ed Yoon

A customer had a camcorder going and we'll have to wait with what he comes up with. But Carl said they shot a pro DVD in January and that it'll become available in May, so I think it'd be better to just get that one when it's ready. _________________ Ed Yoon

I've always been a fan of his playing....and he definitely reminds me of EJ sometimes. I remember when I first started playing guitar, I bought this instructional CD-ROM which it had him in it teaching and doing demonstrations. I have been into him ever since. |

I love his playing. I saw him play about two years ago in a big hall to about twenty people which was a bit unfortunate but the trio were superb. I got into his playing after seeing him on a Steve Bailey bass video.
He is about Eric Johnson-y but the intervallic stuff he does is purely his own.
Cheers,

Yeah, Carl plays some seriously scary lines. His tone - especially the distorted lead sound - is reminiscent of EJ and some of his fast pentatonic phrasing sounds similar as well, but Carl's got his own stuff. _________________ Ed Yoon
