Hi Scott,
Since you've obviously tried a lot of different speakers, I was wondering how you like the Celestion G12-65 speakers?
I've seen Landau is, or has been using them, but I also noticed quite some vintage gear freaks dislike them. Did you ever try those?

I love Greenbacks, and Rick Skillman of Celestion says that the 65 is the closest thing to it in a higher watt speaker. Whether you like it depends on how picky you are, if you're already a Greenback fan. I had two 65's in my 2x12 but I was missing the sound of Greenbacks so I replaced the 65's with them and learned that I only had to turn my amp down one number to use them safely. I've heard Mike use 65's live and it sounds great in the audience - I just couldn't get used to playing them. However they do sound pretty close to a Greenback in some ways, so the only way to know for sure is to try them.

Do you have one in your hrd? They are 25 watts right? Oh, and next time you’re in Chicago at Reggie’s or wherever, you can use my hrd anytime. Hopefully it’s not 2038. 🤣🙄

Yes, I took the 65 out of my HRD and put in a Greenback, which is probably kinda risky, but I use it as a wet amp more than play loud through it. Thanks for the offer, hopefully we'll get there sooner than that!

Something that helped me with speaker choice was buying a suhr load box and buying irs and trying them out. I wasted lots of money on speakers I didn’t like and probably could have paid for the load box with the money.
I thought the 65s were darker then the greenback. But they feel similar to me—they compress in that sweet way and never get fizzy. So 65s with a brighter mic placement probably sound good.
Scott knows better then me—just thought I’d give my 2cents.

Thanks Dizzy, you're right. I was listening to my 65's in a 2x12, and in that cab they were about the same brightness as the Greenbacks in my 4x12 - but when I put a 65 in the 4x12 it was much darker than the Greenbacks.

Thanks dizzy, I got quite lucky to have gotten in touch with a guitar collector (friendof a friend..) who apparently also owns a few of almost every speaker there is. He'll let me try his, super nice guy.

About the Suhr Reactive Load IR, Scott, are you experienced with that one too? I thought for recording at home it might maybe be a good solution, but from what I read, you'd always rather mic the amp anyways, right?

I have the first Suhr reactive load, and I really like some of the York Audio and Celestion IR's, but so far nothing I've heard can replace my cabinet. It's an ongoing hobby to see if one day I'll be able to get widows in my room again.
