Hey Scott,
On the GuitarWank podcast you mentioned a while back that there was a pedal that was about to come out and that it would be a big competitor to the actual Klon. Is that out yet? I remember you said you couldn't talk much about it.

BTW, it's not like I am a huge fan of the Klon at all. I just know that the damn thing if freaking expensive and some people love it for whatever reason.

It's the Xotic Soul Driven, but it doesn't sound like a Klon. It's a great sounding pedal and I'm sure I'll use it, but the Klon has been my main recording pedal for a few years - it's the pedal I used for a lot of the solos and melodies on Vibe Station. I haven't heard any other pedal yet which sounds like it, and I've heard a few of the clones.

Have you tries the clones by J. Rockett ?
The Archer silver or the gold, maybe?
I own one which pleases me a lot, and it seems to be good to make tone like you, like Jeff Beck or just like me
But i can't compare it with a real one...
Can you tell us what are the main differences you have found on all the clones you have tried compared to the one you have?

Sorry I won't be much help because I don't remember the names of the ones I've tried. I remember when he re-made them in a smaller box and I thought they sounded terrible. I've heard a couple more which sounded better, but not as fat sounding as the original. I think the only way you'll really know is to borrow an original from somewhere and test it yourself. It's possible that one of the clones you mentioned sounds close enough to avoid paying big money for the real one. My Klon cost 400 when I bought it new - I can't believe how much they're selling for now.

I believed too that the main difference is the fatness of the sound.
I can hear it in your ultimate tone video.
When you say terrible, it means very bad, or very good?
I guess it's the first, in France we use it for both...

I have another question, i know you don't like buffer.
But the Klon, and my clone, have buffer which is always on.
If you would want to use your Klon live, How would you put it on your board ?

Terrible means bad.

I'm not an expert on which pedals have buffers - I didn't know the Klon had one. I wouldn't use it live anyway because it's too big, and the Maxon SD-9 is my favorite distortion pedal for live playing, because it sounds equally good on all pickups - the Klon sounds better on the bridge pickup than the neck pickup in my opinion.

If you have distortion pedals on your board and some have buffers, you just have to move the order around until you get the best result. I always plug into the pedal I use the most first, which is the RC Booster.

Yes I have tried to arrange my pedals in many orders and I have tried too with an FX looper and the best I have found is the same as you say:
moving them around to find the best.

But I have loosed the freedom to put them in the order most used first.

Hey Scott,
I was curious if you have ever tried the Maxon OD-820 Overdrive Pro? It's their "version" of a Klon and I remember it being pretty cool-a different sound than a Klon but still really nice. Just curious.

I had a VOP-9 and didn't like it that much, so it'll be interesting to hear the OD-820. I'll post again after I've tried it. Thanks for the info Travis!

The OD-820 sounds great - closest thing to a Klon I've heard yet. No reason to spend stupid amounts of money when you can buy this for $299.
