Hi Scott -
I know this is like ancient history for you, but I'm hoping for some insight.
I recently transcribed your solo on "Cat Tales" from the Jean Luc Ponty album, and I always liked the 'breathiness' of the tone you got back then and in the early TT days. Was there anything in the signal chain that helped to tame that hard transient you hear on picked notes, or do you just have superior dynamic control in your picking hand - lol? I've seen some modern players, such as Kurt Rosenwinkel, who get a similar sound but there seems to be pedals that kind of 'gate' the sound just enough to tame that initial pick attack.
That's a Peavey Special 130 amp, running into a custom made tube power amp - the Boogie power amps hadn't come out yet.
What you're probably hearing are the "double screw" Seymour Duncan '59 pickups. Holdsworth had the idea to take the screw half of two '59 pickups and put them together, and Seymour made it for him. They have an extremely smooth and compressed sound - therefore less pick noise. The down side is they have absolutely no bass at all. I used them for awhile and went back to the regular '59's.

My favorite tone of yours is when you played a strat in the early/mid 80's. I am not really sure it was a strat but it looked like it (the electrik band days). There was just something very smooth and warm about that tone. _________________ Plan like you are going to live forever, live like you are going to die tomorrow.
